James is a retired veteran who became homeless after an accident in 2015 left him with serious and permanent injuries.  He was living at a local emergency homeless shelter for over eight months because he could no longer afford rising rents or climb the multiple flights of stairs to his apt. A case worker helped him find an opening in an affordable housing complex in Oakland. He is now a thriving member of the community, which he credits in part to his current housing situation. “I’m not sure how I got so lucky. There are so many people waiting in shelters for homes.”
